The Burczyk property consists of 73% hydric soils and a tributary that flows into the Little Menomonee River. The Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission designated 23 acres of this property as an environmental corridor, making it an important preservation area. In addition to the natural, water-absorbing soils, MMSD partnered with the US Fish and Wildlife Service to restore 34 acres to native prairie habitat that can typically hold up to 90 % of the rainwater that falls on the land, compared to a mowed lawn, which can only hold and infiltrate about 5%.
