98.9% CAPTURED AND CLEANED IN 2015
Out of all the rain, melting snow and stormwater that entered MMSD's regional sewer system in 2015, the District captured and cleaned 98.9%.
The goal nationally for communities with combined sewers is to capture and clean 85% of all the water that enters the sewer system.
MMSD's water reclamation facilities, combined, cleaned 67.1 billion gallons of water in 2015, returning it to Lake Michigan.
To reduce the risk of basement backups during heavy rain, the District did have one combined sewer overflow of 685 million gallons and one separate sewer overflow of 2 million gallons.
Since the Deep Tunnel started operating in 1994, MMSD has captured and cleaned 98.3% of all water that entered the regional sewer system.
