LABORATORY MICROBIOLOGIST 

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented microbiologist to perform routine and non-routine microbiological analyses on waters, wastewaters and other environmental samples and other duties related to laboratory operations in our Research & Central Laboratory department.  As a senior analyst, the Laboratory Microbiologist will also be responsible for method development, data interpretation, report preparation and some procurement related to the microbiology area.  Another key component of the job includes performance of microscopic examination and evaluation of wastewaters for the District's Wastewater Reclamation Facilities.

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in microbiology or biological sciences with coursework including at least 24 semester hours in microbiology or advanced biological sciences; and three courses in chemistry including quantitative analysis or equivalent.

Experience should include five years of recent job related experience or three years of recent post-graduate work in microbiology; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  The successful candidate will possess excellent communication skills and understanding of wastewater treatment processes.  Knowledge of and the ability to apply the principles and practices of chemistry and microbiology, analytical techniques and standard laboratory practices.  Familiarity with NR149, NR219, NELAC and the requirements of the Wisconsin Dept. of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection Certification for microbiology.  Experience in working in one or all programs is highly desirable.  In-depth knowledge of the specialized tools and semi-complex to complex microbiology laboratory equipment.  In specific, experience in performing microscopic examination and evaluation of wastewater is highly desirable. 

Residency within MMSD boundaries (which includes Milwaukee County excluding South Milwaukee) required within one year. Valid Driver's License required and physical capabilities to perform job-related tasks.

Salary range:  $66,440.14 annual; competitive benefits package.

SENIOR PROJECT MANAGER - PROCESS ENGINEER

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) is seeking a professional engineer to provide project management for capital projects.  In addition, the District is specifically seeking applicants with expertise in wastewater treatment processes and wastewater treatment plant energy management.  Expertise in the areas of instrumentation and control systems and wastewater treatment plant operations is also desirable. 
essential expertise:
  • Designing and operating wastewater treatment processes including preliminary treatment, primary treatment, secondary biological process, secondary clarification and return sludge systems, and disinfection.
  • Designing and operating biosolids handling processes including pumping, screening, thickening, dewatering, anaerobic digestion and thermal drying.
  • Knowledge and experience in wastewater treatment plant energy management, which includes reducing energy demands and consumption, as well as increasing energy production through on-site generation of energy from renewable sources.  Specific knowledge and experience in on-site electrical power generation from digester gas and possibly high strength wastes is desired.
  • Knowledge and experience in performing economic analyses of proposed capital projects to compare projected energy cost savings to the cost of implementing the project.  Ability to calculate the life-cycle cost of a project in order to determine the return on investment.
  • Knowledge and experience in using instrumentation and control systems for monitoring and controlling wastewater treatment plant processes and facilities.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Six to seven years of job related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong project management skills
  • High degree of interpersonal and problem-solving skills with demonstrated ability to resolve conflict
  • Ability to apply engineering principles and practices to the solution of engineering problem
  • Experience in managing and monitoring project budgets
  • Primavera scheduling software experience and GIS software knowledge is preferred
  • Expertise in the areas of instrumentation and control systems and wastewater treatment plant operations is also desirable
  • Training on OSHA safety, confined spaces and first aid; Ability to perform all physical requirements of the job including confined space entry
  • Computer software proficiency
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration

SENIOR PROJECT MANAGER - RESIDENT ENGINEER

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) is seeking a professional engineer to provide resident engineering for capital projects in the District's three primary areas of focus (water reclamation facilities, conveyance system and flood protection).  The successful candidate will provide full-time, on-site construction contract management and administration services to ensure successful contract completion on time and within budget.

ESSENTIAL EXPERTISE:
  • Ability to manage and administer multiple construction contracts simultaneously to ensure that construction is successfully completed in accordance with the contract documents and regulations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and coordinate the work of contractors with ongoing facility operation and maintenance activities as well as the work of other stakeholders. 
  • Ability to successfully work through situations involving stakeholders that may have different interests, perspectives and personalities. 
  • Proficiency in reading and understanding contract plans, specifications, shop drawings, reports, bids, change order proposals, schedules and other related documentation.
  • Ability to facilitate development of solutions to construction problems and to analyze solutions proposed by others for effectiveness.  Proficiency in developing opinions of cost with respect to proposed contract changes.
  • Ability to negotiate and resolve contract disputes by analyzing contract documents along with other information provided for or against a claimed cause. 
  • Ability to utilize verbal and written communication skills to protect the Owner's interests and minimize risks throughout construction.
  • Ability to work safely and in compliance with all safety and work rules and regulations. 
  • Computer software proficiency including Microsoft Word, Excel, Project (or other scheduling software) and Oracle/Primavera Contract Manager.
