Give Your Household Hazardous Waste A New Home

Many products you use in your home and yard contain hazardous materials. Improper disposal of these products can cause fires, injuries to people and animals, and groundwater contamination. This guide will help you identify hazardous products in your home. Keep your home safe by properly disposing of hazardous products.Latex paint can be dried before disposal in municipal trash, or it can be brought to any of the mobile collection sites or permanent facilities.

  1. Get a container - (An old cardboard box).
  2. Line with heavy plastic.
  3. Use an absorbent (Kitty litter, sawdust, newspaper, etc.).
  4. Spread out a layer of absorbent and a layer of paint, let it dry. Repeat as necessary.
  5. When absorbent mixture has dried, wrap in a plastic bag and put in weekly trash.
  6. Recycle empty paint containers. Leave covers loose so hauler knows you have emptied or hardened and dried the paint.
Buy Smart
  • Think twice before you buy! Switch to safe substitutes.
  • Read the label. Make sure the product will do what you want before purchasing. Follow label directions for safe usage, storage and disposal.
  • Purchase only the amount you need and use up what you buy.
  • Avoid aerosols. Choose pump sprays or other alternatives.
  • Select water-based over solvent-based products when available.
Proper Disposal
  • Stores that sell car batteries must accept them back for recycling.
  • Give leftovers to someone who will use them up for their intended purpose. Reuse products such as paint thinner and paint.
  • NOTE: A product exchange program that provides residents access to unused items is available at the two permanent facilities. Products typically available are: lawn and garden fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides; paints, stains and thinners; household cleaners; empty gas containers; automotive products, such as transmission fluid, brake fluid and motor oil; and spray paint. Please contact the permanent sites for product exchange information.
  • Never pour oil, antifreeze, or other hazardous materials on the ground, into storm sewers or down the drain.
  • Bring hazardous products that you cannot use up or give away to a Household Hazardous Waste Collection site.
  • Do not bring in hazardous wastes from businesses.
Be Careful- These products have warning labels on them for a reason. Before putting them in your car, take the following precautions:
  • Keep products in their original containers when possible.
  • Make sure products are properly sealed to prevent leaks and spills.
  • If a container is leaking, put it in a secondary leak-proof container.
  • Do not mix products together.
  • Dangerous reactions can occur when some chemicals are mixed.
  • Pack containers in sturdy boxes in the trunk of your vehicle, away from the driver, passengers and pets.
  • Cardboard boxes work well, but containers (other than gasoline cans) and boxes cannot be returned to you.
  • Please do not put items in plastic bags. If a product does not have the original label, label it yourself if you are certain of the contents. This will help us dispose of it properly.
  • Always store products in a secure place, away from children, pets, sparks and flames.
