Recipes for a Non-Toxic Home

You can precycle by using the following alternatives instead of your usual household cleaners. Household cleaners like oven cleaners and furniture polishes have toxic chemicals in them that can get into our drinking water when they are not properly disposed of. These same chemicals can be dangerous to our health, too. These recipes work just as well and they're cheaper too!

All Purpose Cleaner
3 tsp. Liquid soap, or
1/4 cup vinegar, or
1/4 cup lemon juice, or
1/4 cup Borax (per gallon of water)

Use in a spray bottle or bucket and adjust the proportions depending on the job. Borax and soap act as disinfectants.

Oven Cleaner
Sprinkle salt on spills immediately
Baking soda
Vinegar
Salt
#000 steel wool

Clean grease with rag and vinegar. Sprinkle salt on spills; let it sit for a few minutes, then scrape the spill and wash the area clean. For stubborn spots, use baking soda and steel wool.

Destroying Cockroaches and Ants
Powdered Sugar
Borax

Combine in equal parts and sprinkle in traffic areas and places where they crawl.

Mildew & Lime Deposit Remover
1/2 cup white vinegar
Warm water
1/2 cup Borax

Dissolve Borax in water, add vinegar. Make a fresh batch for each use.

Disinfectant
1/4 cup Borax
1/2 gallon water

Silver Polish
1 tsp. salt
Sheet of aluminum foil
1 tsp. baking soda

Put foil in the bottom of a pan. Add 2-3 inches of water, then the baking soda and salt. Bring to a boil; add silver pieces making sure the water covers the silver. Boil 2-3 minutes; remove from pan and rinse and dry. For larger items, run hot water into the kitchen sink; add foil and salt; let item sit for 2-3 minutes; rinse and dry.

Brass/Copper Cleaner
Equal parts of vinegar and lemon juice
Salt

Add enough to make a paste. Apply with a soft cloth; rinse and dry. Rub with olive oil to maintain.

Drain Cleaners
1/4 cup baking soda
1/2 cup vinegar

Pour baking soda, then vinegar down drain. Close drain until boiling stops. Pour boiling water. Use a plunger or snake. Take the elbow off the pipe.

Window Cleaner
1/2 cup vinegar
1 gallon warm water
