Agreement commits to cooperative efforts in
watershed approach to water quality, facilities planning
The MMSD, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Southeastern Wisconsin
Regional Planning Commission recently signed a memorandum of understanding, agreeing
to collaborate on water resource planning by using the watershed approach. This
approach is recommended by the US Environmental Protection Agency, and MMSD, WDNR,
and SEWRPC agree! The signed agreement is groundbreaking because it solidifies agency
responsibilities and expectations up front.
In fact, the agreement commits staff from the three agencies to work cooperatively
throughout the process. This is important because there are two parallel studies
(SEWRPC's and MMSD's) that have common goals of protecting public health and the
environment. By signing the document, the agencies further agree to respect each
other’s traditional roles and authorities for water resource planning. Our planning
process has a solid foundation, and we fully expect to build a plan with our public
that protects our water resouces.
