At the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD), our internship and co-op programs focus on supporting and encouraging the educational ambitions of the next generation as part of our commitment to public service.
MMSD's intern program has existed for over 25 years. The program aims to build awareness of opportunities for careers in water-related industries by exposing interns and co-op students to a hands-on learning experience to help inspire and educate them about future water-related careers.
Interns can expect paid work experience in areas such as Community Outreach, Construction, Engineering, Laboratory Services, Sustainability, and Water Quality Protection, as well as Co-op positions in Water Reclamation and Maintenance Engineering.
In addition to being exposed to jobs related to the student's course of study, the summer intern program includes professional development training on relevant topics. The program also includes field trips designed to help students better understand the work at MMSD and its impact on the Greater Milwaukee area.
MMSD’s intern program operates from May to August. Interns will work 40 hours per week for 12 weeks. On average, MMSD hires 30 interns and co-op students for a summer term. The summer intern application period opens in January and closes in February each year.
Intern applicants are to be 18 years of age or older. Summer interns work 40 hours per week for 12 weeks, from May to August.
The Water Reclamation Operations and Maintenance Engineering Co-ops run for TWO or THREE nonconsecutive 16-week terms, each term being 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. MMSD is looking for two students for this role. One student will begin the first co-op term in the summer of 2026, return in the spring of 2027, and finish in the fall of 2027. The second student will begin the first co-op term in the fall of 2026, return in the summer of 2027, and finish in the spring of 2028. Co-op application period will open in January and close in February 2026.
The co-ops will assist OCC staff with routine monitoring of various unit processes, including screening, aeration basins, clarifiers, and solids processing. Co-ops may also collect and analyze data on unit processes. Co-ops will assist project engineers on material capital repair and replacement projects. Other duties may include performing field inspections, odor monitoring, background research, marking up plans, and other similar, miscellaneous tasks.
Co-op applicants must be 18 years of age or older. Co-ops must remain students throughout the duration of the terms, which are 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
MMSD is an equal-opportunity employer committed to providing equal employment opportunities for all persons. MMSD does not discriminate based on race, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, or any other legally protected status.
