Reporting a Wet Basement

REPORT A WET BASEMENT

 

Please call your municipal public works department to report water in your basement, a copy of the below form will also be shared with your municipality. IMPORTANT! - Water in the basement can be very dangerous.

  1. Do not go into a basement with standing water. Electricity + Water = Danger.
  2. Call your municipal public works department to report the problem. If your municipality is unable to help you, call MMSD at (414) 282-7200.
  3. Call your homeowners/renters insurance agent.
  4. Wait for the water to drain out of the basement before entering. Or, call a qualified electrician to disconnect the power before you enter a flooded basement.
  5. Take pictures or video of the contents in your basement before cleaning.
  6. Begin cleaning. Make sure to disinfect any affected area with a bleach and water solution (four tablespoons of bleach per gallon of water).
  7. Make a written record of the date and time the water in the basement started and ended.
  8. Make a record of what was damaged with an estimate of the value.
  9. Consider hiring a cleaning service.

* If you clean the basement yourself, be sure to wear appropriate protection, such as rubber boots and gloves.
* Anything that cannot be cleaned should be thrown out.
