FRESHWATER RESOURCES MONITORING

The Freshwater Resources Monitoring group is responsible for conducting surface water quality monitoring at nearly 100 monitoring sites throughout the Milwaukee area watersheds. Each year, the group analyzes millions of field- and lab-generated results to characterize the rivers, creeks, and Lake Michigan. The data are collected in compliance with MMSD’s Wisconsin Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (WPDES) permit and are used to assess the impact of the conveyance system, treatment plant operations, and MMSD projects on the waterways. The group prepares regulatory and program-specific reports and uploads the data to state and national databases that are used for regulatory, research, and educational purposes by external stakeholders.

Water Quality Annual Reports

To summarize the large amount of data collected each year, the Freshwater Resources Monitoring group produces an annual report that highlights water quality in Southeastern Wisconsin.

Data is uploaded annually to USEPA’s data warehouse and can be viewed or downloaded on the National Water Quality Monitoring Council Water Quality Portal.
