The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District and its partners are planning to improve conditions in Burnham Canal for fish, wildlife, and people by creating new wetland habitat. As planning moves forward, MMSD wants to hear from you about how you use the area today and what you’d like to see in the future.
Your feedback will help inform future discussions about opportunities to make Burnham Canal a place where people can connect with nature and enjoy the water.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and helping shape the future of Burnham Canal!
The Burnham Canal project will create a new wetland and improve opportunities for people to experience and enjoy the area.
Which habitat and water-access features would you most like to see? Rank these features from 1 to 8, where 1 = very important and 8 = not important. Use each number once.
We’d like to hear what other improvements the community will value in the future. We’re considering three potential public access locations, shown on the map as A, B, and C. Current funding does not cover significant improvements for access, but if there is interest in access improvements, project partners will seek additional funding.
Site A: This site is located at 1298 W. Bruce Street. The current access point is from W. Bruce Street, as shown in the photo. The entrance is currently blocked by parking bollards, with tall grass limiting access to the site.
Site B: This site is located on the south side of the 11th Street bridge.
Site C: This site is located where S. 9th Street ends at the Burnham Canal.
How interested would you be in making the following improvements at a public access site? 1 = Very interested | 5 = Not at all interested.
Note: Photos are examples only. The specific amenity will depend on the location, available funding, and additional community feedback.
