The Franklin/Oak Creek Sewer Extension Project will lay the foundation for sanitary sewer service to the southern-most areas of Milwaukee County and northern Racine County. This project began as a request from the City of Oak Creek, City of Franklin, Village of Raymond, and the Village of Caledonia in 2014. The extension was included in MMSD’s 2050 Facilities Plan and Capital Improvement Budget.
In 2022, MMSD began the design of the project, which will extend the 24-inch sewer from Oakwood Road to County Line Road. The City of Franklin and the City of Oak Creek will be connected to the sewer extension once it is completed. The Village of Raymond and the Village of Caledonia will connect to the extension in the future. Concurrent to this planned MMSD project, there will also be a private development within the 27th Street corridor. MMSD is working with the developers and municipalities to coordinate the activities of the two projects.
The sewer extension will be constructed in the median of 27th Street and will be approximately a mile long. The sewer depth ranges from 25 to 85 feet deep and will be built using micro-tunneling methods. The photos below are examples of the micro-boring machine and support structures from similar projects that used a micro-tunneling method.
The design is expected to be completed in late 2025, and the construction in 2027.
