MMSD is repairing cracks in massive ducts that feed treated exhaust from Milorganite dryers up a 350-foot-tall smokestack.

A lot has changed since 1926, but not Milorganite® fertilizer production. Every day, the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) processes wastewater from 1.1 million customers in 29 municipalities, putting cleaner water back into Lake Michigan and producing this sustainable fertilizer.

Following the historic April 2026 storms that dropped 7-plus inches of rain on the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) service area, computer modeling indicates that slightly more than 400 homes in the Bay View were at elevated risk of backups during this historic storm.
